On March 5, 1954 theaters around America were packed with patrons ready to watch The Creature from the Black Lagoon a classic American film about a strange prehistoric beast that lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle.

Jack Arnold, the director of the film wanted to the evoke the feeling of dread throughout the film. It plays upon the basic fear that people have about what might be lurking below the surface of any body of water.

Julia Adams plays Kay Lawrence,  the fiancée of one of the scientists in the expedition, who is kidnapped by the creature.

Two different stuntmen were used to portray the creature and therefore two different suits were used in the movie. Ricou Browning , a professional swimmer and diver, played the creature when it was in the water and wore a lighter suit. Ben Chapman played the creature when it was out of the water with a darker suit.

The creature is getting a smooch between takes!😘

During certain underwater scenes, Browning had to hold his breath up to 4 minutes because the creature suit was not equipped with a tank.

In this scene, a cable can be seen in the background that is hung above the water tanks.
